Setting AwesomeWM for Higher DPI Displays

Case: Running a 15.6″ full-HD screen /1920×1080/, fresh install of AwesomeWM, text in menus and panel is too small to be read comfortably.

Solution

Consider the scaling value as a percentage which you would normally specify in a Monitor Settings dialog: 110%, 120%, etc.

  1. Create/edit ~/.Xresources
  2. Append to file: Xft.dpi: 120.0
  3. $ xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
  4. Log out, log in.

Reportedly, Macs with Retina display require a higher value (160.0) and additional settings.
